Why December is a key month for United

Although Christmas is traditionally a time for giving, minds at Manchester United remain focused on selfish matters as Louis van Gaal's men prepare for six fixtures that could potentially decide whether this will be a season to be jolly.

Yes, this December, the Reds plan to take, take, take and the wish list is quite simple: maintain the challenge for the Barclays Premier League title and remain in the UEFA Champions League. Slaven Bilic's men are excellent travellers though and have beaten Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City on the road this season.

Save the date: The third-round draw will be held on a Monday night at the Wales Sports Awards in Cardiff and United will be among the 64 teams in the pot. Fixtures will be played on 9 or 10 January.

8 DEC: WOLFSBURG (A), 19:45 GMT
Is it sink or swim? That's correct... van Gaal's men need a win in Germany to guarantee safe passage from Group B, although a draw will be enough if PSV draw at home against CSKA Moscow.
Any sub-plots? The Reds will be entered into the Europa League if qualification to the last-16 is out of reach. This tie will also see Bastian Schweinsteiger return to Germany for the first time since joining.
